Jehan had found the perfect ring for Ophelia, and now there was just one final step before he went through with the actual proposal, which was why he had texted and asked mademoiselle Flavia to meet him at this café.

The ring box was resting in a pocket, just in case her sister wished to see it (and he rather wanted to get Flavia's opinion; he was fairly sure Ophelia would like it, but he would still like confirmation), and he sipped an espresso and slowly shredded a pastry as he waited for the younger de Luce to arrive.

An odd text message from Feely's paramour was hardly the sort of thing Flavia had anticipated from her afternoon. It was so strange, she'd almost mentioned it to Feely; perhaps they were having some sort of problem, one of the absurdly dramatic 'relationship issues' the advice columnists in the papers seemed to truck in. If that was the case, Flavia thought they'd be rather better off writing into one such column, instead of asking her. Though it was awfully nice to be considered.

In the end, she opted to keep her mouth shut (secrets and potential blackmail material were the most precious currency of sisterhood), cycling through the streets to the cafe and whatever odd meeting she'd happened to agree to. Her first glimpse of Mr. Prouvaire through the shop window, nervously picking at his food, only deepened the mystery further.

After latching Gladys to a fencepost, she pushed the cafe door open and walked inside. "Hullo, Jehan."
